After getting my heart shattered to pieces yesterday after watching this episode live, I was actually quite okay and calm while watching it with subs today. It could be because I had time to calm down, but I think it was more because I saw the direction as not bad as I thought.
First thing first, I didn’t see the chemistry between Seung Chan and Ye Jin to be lovers. To be honest, I cringed thinking of their possible kiss. I couldn’t comprehend it in my mind. They had chemistry, yes, but I felt it more like the warmth of a little brother who couldn’t stand the injustice that was done to his sister. He saw himself in her, and with his caring nature, he wanted to protect her from all the harm.
On the other hand, when he was with Cindy, their chemistry radiated the kind of attraction that wasn’t anything else but romance. His touch was subtle but his every move made Cindy held her breath and grasped for air. I myself was holding my breath, my face, my heart while watching them. The way he put his arm around her and his face nearly touched her arm, the way she put her dainty hand into his, the way he grabbed her arms, it all made me think about “Now, kiss!” meme. Apparently other people were fanning themselves while watching these, too.
The sad thing about this situation is that while Seung Chan was all things important to Cindy, she wasn’t in his mind at all. When he had all the possible chances to see and understand Ye Jin and make her a part of his life, to him Cindy was just another person out there doing her job. They simply never had chance for quality time together to create a bound. This could be changed though. In this episode when Ye Jin and him visited her in the hospital room, there was a moment she seemed to make an impression on him when she said she didn’t resent Ye Jin. When I saw that, I suddenly felt hope for this couple, no matter how faint it was. And it was like, after all the anxiety I was experiencing, there was this scene of them three being together, physically and also connected through empathy somehow, that really warmed up my heart. How nice it would be if Ye Jin and Cindy could be friends, and Seung Chan to be the one who nurtures this little life.
As for Joon Mo and Ye Jin, their relationship with each other was messed up so badly but I actually felt more for them than any other episodes. It was clearer than ever that they had feelings for each other. They relied too much on their understanding of each other and forgot to consider that when it comes to love, they would be blinded. They thought they knew each other so well by now that they ruled out totally the possibility that they could read things all wrong. Like the moment when Ye Jin realized Joon Mo didn’t meet the pretty prosecutor, she thought Joon Mo was drawing line with her and didn’t trust her enough to share, when it was obvious that her outright confession could very well be the reason why he wouldn’t want to meet any girls now other than her. Look at the way he looked at her when they sat together at the balcony, was it the look of someone who was ready to meet another potential partner/wife? He fell into the trap of keep making mistakes because he was so afraid of doing so, he hurt the one he deeply cared about when it was the least thing ever he wanted to happen, he was losing both friendship and love when he could have both because he thought he shouldn’t be too greedy. The confusion made the confused guy to be even more confused. He was frustrated and attempted to just let it be and hope it will pass like he usually did, but it came to the point of no return already. He didn’t know how to give love properly, and I hope he could learn from Seung Chan who was much more courageous and straightforward. If only he wasn’t paralyzed by fear and knew how to speak up his mind, things would have been different.
The way I saw it was that, Seung Chan and Cindy could bring the best out of each other – Cindy to be kinder and Seung Chan to be his dorky yet manly self, and Joon Mo and Ye Jin could enjoy each other’s company thoroughly when the misunderstanding clears up – it’s the happiness they’ve always longed for.
Cindy wasn’t a bad person, her tongue might be sharp and her attitude might not be the best, but she didn’t mean to hurt anyone. It was more like her armor to protect herself from feeling more than she could handle. When her manager was slapped, I felt immediately her feeling of utter helpless. And she had no choice but to keep working as asked. She actually didn’t have any power to protect herself, let alone protecting others. She had to remain tough. At that point it suddenly dawned on me, apart from the fact that most people would take advantage of her and she would rather not have anything to do with anyone to save the trouble, it was difficult for her to care for other people too even if she wanted to. When someone like Seung Chan who didn’t seem to be swayed by power came, it allowed her to care. With him, she had space to grow, she could somehow breathe in the environment that only suffocated her before. She even giggled with joy, it was a rare moment that both her manager and coordi who were with her for 10 years were surprised to see. His presence was essential to her vitality. He revived a tree, for it to have chance to blossom.
I also want to quote this:
I am rooting for Seung Chan and Cindy to get together. I stated this before, but I think Cindy needs someone caring. Someone who will call her on her bullshit but still be kind and attentive towards her.
Everyone caters to her and never contradict her and no one cares for her (or her feelings). She’s like a race horse to most people in her life. I feel like Seung Chan could fill up the voids in her life.
Also, I think Seung Chan needs to be the one “being loved” not the one “who loves most”.
What I mean is, that his relationships so far have been unrequited crushes towards older, more experienced women who treat him like a puppy or little brother. He needs a relationship in which the other person feels as strongly towards him as he has felt for his past and current crushes. I feel it would do him some good to be the main focus of someone and not be friendzoned again.

And Ye Jin, she could have all sort of flaws, but she could show her deeper layer and uplifting self while being with Joon Mo. Out of all the things she said, what I remembered the most were the thing about dolphin at the beginning of the show and then “With any accident, it’s more important what you do afterward” in this episode. Ye Jin and Joon Mo needed each other to be happy, they could only truly be happy when they were happy with each other. They need to work things out together, in order to be at peace.
With these two pairings, this drama has the potential to be meaningful and all the characters to reach their potentials. If Seung Chan and Ye Jin end up together, I don’t know what to get out of it… I said it many times, but it doesn’t make sense to me if they make Joon Mo and Cindy try so hard to open up and love wholeheartedly for once in their lives, only to be alone in the end. And sometimes I have the feeling that people want Seung Chan to be together with Ye Jin because they like Gong Hyo Jin. I could be wrong, of course, but if it’s true, it’s kind of unfair for Ye Jin. It somehow leads me to IU, that she has such a strong girl-next-door image that it’s difficult for people to accept ‘mean Cindy’. Seung Gi’s cameo in this episode also dabbed a bit into that. When Cindy asked why he set up such a flawless image then be stressed out about it, he said, “Come on, what did we know when we first debuted? You just go with the flow.” You have an image early on in your career and you have to live up to that. When you show something else against people’s perception, they aren’t happy. It isn’t necessarily their fault, but it’s difficult and it creates all sort of conflicting demands.
On the lighter note, Seung Gi’s cameo made me smile, and the relationship between the Administration Queen and Hong Soon was very cute and funny. I didn’t know Kim Jong Kook could act so well, his scenes were hilarious and I enjoyed his appearance very much.
